It is only for the finish it starts to break down, nevertheless the slap-right up finale rescues they on ‘red’. Excellently staged and you will wisely dialogued, it has zero high complications when you look at the life style off their incredibly ugly term.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin told you “The movie motions on a fast rate, the discussion is actually slick and you will characterisations fundamentally productive. Richard Brody on The brand new Yorker listed “This terse and you may taut film noir are centered on new close and you can top-notch issues of the label character, this new unlawful genius (played by Manhood Powell) behind a classy unlawful gambling establishment. The newest film’s creator and you will director, Robert Rossen, sets up a multidimensional chess game, having mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), a beneficial cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) did at the casino and dated an excellent corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic program, the new cast’s suavely controlled gestures out of love and you will danger, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will smartly cocky photographs (also their governmental conscience) get this pugnacious yet , detail by detail spectacle an invisible vintage of one’s category.” [ ten ]

Image has motion and anticipation, and certain quick matches out-of jokes to add preferences. Expert shows by the Penis Powell, just like the a betting house overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, since the a police inspector, as well as in the score . As the plot comes after a familiar trend, the fresh characterizations was fresh in addition to activities adequate to help you overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you can relevant, preventing the emotional, phoney touch. Uncommon camera basics arrive once in a while so you’re able to intensify notice and you will momentarily stop the interest. Good teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, increasing as director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, original journalist and associate music producer, plus helps with making this a softer production.” [ eleven ]

Its generally a question of watching Mr. Powell experience his paces smartly if you find yourself a big throw out-of actors and you will performers offer your classic support. Evelyn Keyes performs the great absolutely nothing lady exactly who brings forth the fresh best in him and you will Ellen Drew is the sleek and you may slinky vixen just who will get him on the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily since villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a separate able concert tour since the an exhausted cops inspector whom in the long run closes happening. A lot of sipping and you can puffing is accomplished of the every alarmed.” [ a dozen ]
